In January, we announced that four of us had joined Discover Adventure to cycle from London to Amsterdam. Well now we are only two days away from the start and after five months of training, we are raring to go! We have had lots of fun training (some sessions were not so fun) and a few incidents along the way, including when myself and Sarah ended up on a dual carriageway and nearly on a motorway when our Sat Nav let us down! Luckily we got off just in time and are fit and healthy to start the challenge!
We set off from London this Friday 12 May at 7am for Harwich – the first part of the ride, which is 82 miles and includes a few stops for water and a lunch break. Once we arrive at Harwich we will sail to the Hook of Holland on the overnight ferry, arriving on Saturday morning (fresh and ready) to continue our bike ride onto Amsterdam.
On our journey, we will pass through the resort towns of Ter Heijde and Scheveningen on the outskirts of The Hague, then head north through Katwijk aan Zee, which is an ancient town at the mouth of the River Rhine and was once the northern frontier of the Roman Empire.
We will then leave the coast at Zandvoort’s long sandy beach and head east and inland, passing through Haarlem, which for centuries has been known as the ‘tulip centre’. As we approach Amsterdam, we will ride past the waterways and parks of Europe’s bike capital to our central finish point – the famous Rijksmuseum.
After a celebratory dinner, we will have the Sunday morning free for sightseeing (and resting) before taking the Eurostar home in the afternoon.
We are really excited to announce that so far we have raised a fantastic total of £4732.32 for our four chosen charities of – Multiple Sclerosis, Help For Heroes, The Terrence Higgins Trust and Children with Cancer, and we‘re expecting more donations to come in before we finish.
We would like to thank everyone for their support and will publish details of how we got on, the final amount raised and photos next week.
